What this article covers

  • Key dates for long weekends in France in May 2027
  • School and work: check availability separately
  • Choose dates that suit the home and the people involved

In France, two periods are worth considering for a stay with friends or family in May 2027: Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 May around Ascension Day, and Saturday 15 to Monday 17 May around Whit Monday. Whether they work for you depends on your working days and the necessary approvals. Both 1 and 8 May fall on a Saturday.

To choose, compare three calendars: the children’s school dates, the adults’ work schedules and the home’s actual availability. Dates that look promising on paper do not confirm a stay.

Key dates for long weekends in France in May 2027

This table uses the school calendar for zones A, B and C in mainland France. The employee column assumes a usual Monday-to-Friday schedule; adapt it to your own working pattern.

Labour DaySaturday 1 MayZone B is still on spring holiday, with school resuming on 3 May; zones A and C have already returned.Does not add a weekday off to the weekend for someone who normally has Saturdays off.
Ascension DayThursday 6 MayPupils have no classes on Friday 7 May.6–9 May is possible if Thursday is a day off, Friday is free or approved as leave, and you do not work at the weekend.
Victory in Europe DaySaturday 8 MayFalls within the Ascension weekend.Does not create a separate second long weekend.
Whit MondayMonday 17 MayA public holiday, after the spring holidays in zones A, B and C.15–17 May is possible if Monday is not a working day for you; it may be designated as a solidarity working day in France.

The dates come from Service Public’s 2027 calendar and the French Ministry of Education’s school calendar, checked on 26 October 2026.

School and work: check availability separately

After the 2027 spring holidays, schools reopen on Monday 19 April in zone C, Monday 26 April in zone A and Monday 3 May in zone B. Ascension Day therefore comes after all three zones have returned to school.

No classes on Friday 7 May does not automatically mean parents have the day off. In France’s private sector, taking a “bridge” day between a public holiday and the weekend depends, among other things, on applicable agreements or an employer’s decision. Also check how your workplace arranges the French solidarity working day before counting on Monday 17 May.

For Corsica, French overseas territories or a school with a different schedule, check the relevant calendar. If people taking part live in different territories or countries, each person should check their own dates before agreeing on a shared period.

Choose dates that suit the home and the people involved

Start by asking which dates your host is actually considering offering. They may want to use their home over Ascension, welcome other relatives at Pentecost or leave a few days between stays.

Suggest two options, such as 6–9 May and 15–17 May, if both suit your household. This flexibility lets you discuss a specific plan without making one set of dates feel like an obligation.

Next, compare the time you would spend there with the journey. For a two-night stay, staying in a home a few hours away may be simpler than travelling to a distant destination. Check transport times, the connection between the station and the home, and the total budget before buying tickets.

A simple plan: from an idea to an agreement

First: share possible dates

Talk with everyone involved, then note which dates could work and which still need confirmation. For hosts, adding their Kaza’s availability helps friends and family make a specific request.

If you have not yet organised your circle, the guide to creating a Klub with friends and family helps you start with the people already involved in this first plan.

Next: get the necessary confirmations

Get your leave approved if required, then confirm the dates and who will be staying with your host. On KazaKlub, a Kaza being visible or available does not mean a stay has been accepted: wait for explicit agreement on the arrangements.

Here is a message to adapt: “We’d like to come from 6 to 9 May, with two adults and two children. Would that work for you? We still need to get Friday approved as leave. If those dates don’t suit you, we could also look at the following weekend.”

Before booking travel: agree on the details

Check the sleeping arrangements, which areas you can use, the rules for pets, bedding and towels, cleaning, and any costs. If you are travelling with children, use the checklist of things to check in a home you are borrowing (guide in French).

Also agree on how to let each other know if dates change. Unexpected events can happen; giving early notice leaves more options for rearranging the stay.

A few days before: prepare for arrival

Reconfirm an arrival window, an available contact and the key handover. Make sure you can access the instructions you need when you arrive, even if mobile reception is poor. If your host will be away, our guide to arranging a key handover in their absence (guide in French) explains the options to agree on.

Frequently asked questions

Which May 2027 long weekend should families with children consider first?

Ascension, from 6 to 9 May, is a first option because pupils in France’s zones A, B and C have no classes on Friday 7 May. You still need to check the adults’ work schedules and get the host’s agreement.

Does everyone have Whit Monday off?

No. In France, 17 May is a public holiday, but it may be worked, particularly as the solidarity working day. Check the rules that apply to your job before confirming a Monday return.

Do you have to lend your own home in return to stay with someone you know?

KazaKlub allows people to share or lend a home without a reciprocal exchange being required. Availability, who will stay and the arrangements still need to be agreed with the host.

Have some dates in mind? Sign up to KazaKlub, then organise your circle of friends and family to prepare your requests and availability.
